Many games/mobile apps in recent years have soared in popularity, and sunk into obscurity. Some have done this in the same year they were released. Others are still played to this day, though by very few people. Can one truly say that those games are only a fad when they still have a player base that hasn't yet abandoned them? And if they are just fads, is Pokemon GO set to suffer the same fate?
Rapid Growth and Popularity
When it comes to something like Pokemon, it is very unlikely that GO is just another fad. That is true, at least for those of us in the United States. Before getting any further into it, let's take a look at some of the reasons it is gaining popularity here in the states:
- Many of my generation grew up watching Pokemon and playing the companion card game.
- As the anime progressed, so too did the games associated with the series
- Those fortunate enough to own many copies of the handheld titles were always looking to "catch 'em all"
This game may seem like a fad to many people, but when it comes to Pokemon in the United States, it is hard to find a 30 year old man or woman who doesn't own a copy of at least one game associated with the series.
Will It Last?
My answer to this question? Most definitely. This isn't a game simply gaining popularity because of "virality." Pokemon was a part of my childhood growing up, as it was for many American citizens. It is mostly adults getting into the game, and with it still popular among children, there's a chance that catching Pokemon can become a family activity.
Aside from that, Niantic has already publicly stated plans to add more Pokemon into the game as its player base grows. This will guarantee more followers of the already popular app.
For many of us in the United States, venturing out to find Pokemon would be living a childhood dream. That is why I can say with certainty that there is no way this app will just be a "fad." Many of us love taking trips to new places, and with the diversity of environments in this country, there will always be a variety of Pokemon to catch.
My friends and I are already aiming to be the very best... that no one ever was. It'll be tough to catch them all, but we are determined to make it so. How do you feel about the possibility of this being a fad? Will it fade? Or is it set to be... one of the very best? Let us know in the comments!
